About the Event

Africa Renewables Investment Summit (ARIS) is a leading renewable energy investment summit with a conference and expo. The event seeks to accelerate renewable energy investment in African countries by linking institutional investors, project developers, policy makers, energy utilities, regulators, corporates and the most influential energy sector decision makers under one roof.

An estimated $70 billion in annual renewable energy investments is required for Africa to meet its electrification targets by 2030, according to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). ARIS attracts key renewable energy stakeholders and investors from across the globe to discuss solutions to fast track Africa’s energy transition, as well as facilitate investment in renewable energy.

Together with our strategic partners and affiliates, we’ll identify potential projects across the continent for potential investment, and link them to interested investors and developers. ARIS is not just another talk shop, it’s a platform where actual investment is made. Our suite of investors will make investment pledges for renewable energy projects, and sign memorandum of understandings (MoUs) with relevant authorities for specific countries they wish to invest in.

Africa’s rapidly growing cities and economies require massive expansion of clean, modern and affordable energy systems. Renewable energy provides Africa with the best opportunity to leap-frog straight into a sustainable energy future.

The most important event on Africa's energy transition!

The Investment Case for African renewables – Why investors should look at Africa now

Why Africa? Africa has the world's largest potential for renewable energy but only receives less than 2% of global renewable energy investment. So much underexploited opportunity, and a greater need for energy, with 600 million Africans having no access to electricity. Many African countries have made tremendous legislative movements to attract investment, the ball is now investors' court. This session will spell out the trends and intricacies of developing projects in Africa, and why investors should starting investing now. Attendees will discover how to invest in African renewable energy projects, and find out how they can attract investment for their projects in Africa.

09:30 - 10:15 AM Hall 7

Reimagining Project Finance for African RE projects – African oriented solutions

Traditional financing methods for renewable energy projects don't always work for African conditions. This session will explore what innovative finance options lenders and investors can utilise in financing African RE projects to accelerate Africa's energy transition. How to navigate currency volatility challenges and hedge against foreign exchange risks. Why local currency financing is changing the game. What risk mitigation alternatives to sovereign guarantees to explore. Insights into cryptos, green bonds, crowdfunding, grants, blended finance, concessional funding etc.

10:30 - 11:45 AM Hall 7

South Africa - What does it take to deliver 7GW of RE in the 3 years?

South Africa is on massive procurement drive for renewables, with ministerial determinations for procuring 4 800 MW of wind, 2 000 MW of solar PV and 513 MW of battery energy storage capacity within 3 years approved. This session will delineate how developers can successfully bid in Africa's largest renewable energy market, opportunities for investors and what needs to be done to successfully implement this tremendous procurement drive.

10:30 - 11:15 PM Hall 7

African Utilities of the Future

With digital disruptions and the increasing penetration of decentralised power systems dominated by renewables, what does the future of African power utilities look like? This session will look at impact of renewables on African utilities and how they be transformed into modern utilities of the future and stay in business. Why market liberalization in power generation can increase energy security. What opportunities for for public-private-partnerships (PPPs) are there? Why digitalization is good for both customers and utilities alike.

09:10 - 09:45 AM Hall 7

Will Green Hydrogen finally unlock Africa's wind energy potential?

Africa has 59,000GW of onshore and offshore wind energy potential - enough to meet the continent’s energy demand 250 times over. Despite this much potential, the continent has only harnessed 0.01 per cent of its wind resource. Africa currently has around 7GW of installed wind capacity as of the end of 2020, led by South Africa. This session will look at how the demand for Green Hydrogen by the transport and heavy industries for its decarbonisation goals could help propel the development of Africa's wind energy sector. What investors should know. How North African countries could meet EU's Green Hydrogen demand.

09:45 - 10:30 AM Hall 7

Scaling Solar Energy Investment in Africa -

Despite boasting 40 % of the world’s solar energy potential, Africa only has 1 % of the world’s solar panels. This session will look at what Africa needs to do to attract more utility-scale solar energy investment. Lessons for the rest of Africa from South and Egypt's success stories. Opportunities in corporate renewable and private off-takers.

10:45 - 11:30 AM Room 202

AfCFTA – Revolutionising Intra-African Energy Trading

Africa's renewable energy resources are unevenly distributed. The culmination of the AfCFTA provides Africa a great opportunity to address this unevenness through seamless cross-border energy trading via power pools. This session will explore how linking excess capacity in countries where power is produced more economically, to countries with demand can help improve energy access.

09:10 - 09:50 AM Hall 7

Off-grid and Energy Access – Highest growth markets in Africa investors should watch out for.

Off-grid solar is fastest way to give Africans without electricity access to energy. Africa's off-grid solar market is currently estimated at over $24 billion as of 2020. This session will uncover how the off-grid business model works and how investors can tap into the sector. Funding options available to potential investors.

09:50 - 10:30 AM Hall 7

Investability of Hydropower in Africa in the era of decentralisation

Though hydropower is currently Africa's leading renewable energy generation technology, the continent has only harnessed 10% of this resource's potential. This session will unpack solutions Africa can adopt to attract investment and unlock its hydropower potential.
