Designation: Head of Commercial, Envusa Energy

Duncan Abel is the Head of Commercial at Envusa Energy, an energy trader jointly owned by Anglo American and EDF Renewables. Prior to joining Anglo American in 2022, Duncan spent 11 years at Nedbank funding renewable energy and climate change projects. Envusa aims to generate and trade clean and reliable energy from a portfolio of renewable energy assets across Southern Africa, having developed a unique and market-leading commercial structure that is flexible and scalable and optimally matches generation from portfolios of RE assets with client demand. The commercial structure enabled the development of a first-of-its-kind portfolio funding structure that similarly scales within a rapidly evolving energy landscape and reduces risk for our funding partners. In February 2024, Envusa reached financial close on its first phase of assets, a cluster of wind and solar PV projects totaling 520MW. This first phase of projects will start generating electricity in 2026, which will be sold to Anglo American Platinum, Kumba Iron Ore and De Beers, which collectively own over 20 mines, smelters and processing plants with an estimated renewable energy demand of over 3GW. New projects are being added to the portfolio annually to meet the growing RE demand from existing and new clients.
