Sumaya Mahomed is a sustainable development and energy access expert with over 16 years of experience. She specializes in the design and implementation of renewable energy infrastructure projects. Sumaya holds a Master’s in Sustainable Development, a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering, a Post Graduate diploma in Engineering, and is currently completing an MBA. In 2018, she established Wekeza Energy, a management consulting company providing consultancy services on energy access and sustainable development. Sumaya has led the Uganda Integrated Energy programme for the past four years, managing its operations, developing its strategy and engaging with government stakeholders. She contributed to the development of isolated grid regulations in Uganda and led the business modeling and policy work on the Uganda integrated energy project. Sumaya has also successfully managed the City of Cape Town’s Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management programme, which has won many awards for its progressive programme, such as ESKOM’s 2012 ETA Award, and an honorary award from the World Green Building Council for Energy Efficiency in 2014 and the Mayor’s Award for best capital programme for renewable energy in 2016. Sumaya has received numerous awards for her work, including the international award for Best Energy Manager in Sub-Saharan Africa from the Association of Energy Engineers in 2022. She continues to work on renewable energy, energy efficiency and smart metering projects in South Africa and East Africa. Sumaya is a board member of the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa and the Enlit Conference.
