Designation: JET IP Green Hydrogen Programme Director, IDC

Dr Rebecca Maserumule is currently the Programme Director: Green Hydrogen of the Just Energy Transition Implementation Plan (JET IP) PMO. The JET IP PMO is hosted at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and is a dedicated project management office within the IDC focused on driving the development and implementation of green hydrogen initiatives in South Africa. It plays a key role in the country’s transition towards a green hydrogen economy by overseeing projects, coordinating stakeholders and facilitating the commercialisation strategy for green hydrogen production. Before joining the IDC, she worked as the Chief Director: Hydrogen and Energy at the National Department of Science, Technology and Innovation where she worked to implement the Hydrogen Society Roadmap as well the Hydrogen South Africa Programme. During her tenure she introduced new research and development programmes in carbon capture storage and usage. Also under her leadership, the Hydrogen South Africa programme was extended for an additional ten-years from 2021 to 2031. From 2022 to the start of 2025, she also served as the Chair of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, which is an inter-governmental cooperative initiative founded in 2003 consisting of 26 countries and the European Commission. She started her career at the Council for Science and Industrial Research as a Senior Researcher focused on the role of climate change on water resources. She graduated with a PhD in Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute which is located in Troy, New York. Rebecca has close to twenty years of experience in the sustainability space. She has global networks in clean energy that she has been able to leverage for green climate funding for South African technical cooperation programmes that supported relevant studies for SOEs and private sector companies in South Africa. Her ability to create robust engagement structures have enabled business-to-business, government-to-government relationships that have led to funding for research, development and innovation activities for industrial-scale demonstrations in South Africa. Her keen understanding of global energy systems and South Africa’s positioning within these systems has allowed her to spearhead the successful development of technology roadmaps for South Africa. Her understanding of the policy landscape both at the local, regional and global level allows her to bring stakeholders together to develop an ecosystem-wide vision for new sectors of the economy. She is considered a global thought leader in the sustainability space which has led her to be invited to co-author global publications on the circular economy and hydrogen economy in partnership with organisations such as the International Energy
