James Beatty is CEO at Enpower Trading (Pty) Ltd, a licensed private electricity trading company with the mission to provide unique and innovative energy supply solutions for the future of energy in South Africa. The First energy trader to secure a license from the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) in over a decade, Enpower Trading will play a critical role in accelerating private investment in new generation capacity, putting power back in South Africa’s hands. James is an energy trader with over 16 years of industry experience including over 10 years in top-tier commodity trading houses Trafigura Group and Glencore Plc spanning trading, business development and origination with a strong focus on Africa. His career highlights include helping to restore power supply and grid stability to Puerto Rico via structuring the fuel solution for the rapid deployment of 75MW diesel-fired emergency power plants immediately after Hurricane Maria and helping to establish the LPG4SDG7 initiative, aiming to achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 7, “universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”, through growing markets for LPG.  Under James’s leadership, Enpower Trading sets out to transform the South African electricity supply industry by facilitating the transportation of electricity on behalf of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to customers; a business model premised on ensuring municipalities that operate on the local distribution grid remain surplus-neutral while providing customers with cheaper and cleaner electricity.
